The dreary winter weather that the United Kingdom offers can make us all want some winter sun. There are many places within shooting distance that could tempt us. Found south of Sicily it has an area of 316 square kilometres. But, despite its diminutive size it is a popular destination. Here’s why:
What to do
When you go to Malta, you also get the chance to visit Gozo and Comino and all three have things to offer. We start in the capital of Valletta, where the waterfront at sunset is spectacular. Perfect for eating and drinking the night away, there are plenty of things in the day to get your thirst up. St John’s Co-Cathedral is an amazing place and a treasure trove of a religious site. There is so much more to do with Manoel Theatre, Casa Rocca Piccola and Lascaris War Rooms just the tip of the iceberg.

Culture
With 7,000 years of history there is plenty of architecture and scenery to passionately explore. It was around 5,000 years ago during the Neolithic period that Malta had its golden years. This is shown with various temples and the later occupation of Cathaginians, Romans and Byzantines gives more to see. It is, unsurprisingly, a very Mediterranean culture.
Traditional food is seasonal and rustic. Recommended dishes include the fish pie, rabbit stew and ratatouille Maltese style is a great option. If you have a Sunday morning free then head to the Marsaxlokk fish market.
It is a hugely religious country and this leads Maltese people to be traditional in terms of norms and values. A Catholic country, Sunday’s are around mass and they are hospitable and helpful people to be around. Traditional trades and festivals are on the increase and they take their wine very seriously.

There are so many reasons to visit Malta, especially this winter. With islands to visits, dolphins to swim with and tourist sites to see you can get away from the blues for a couple of weeks.
